Orlando gunman’s dad says God should have punished gays, not his son

The father of Orlando gunman Omar Mateen said his son should not have killed 50 people in a gay bar because ‘God himself will punish those involved in homosexuality’.

 
Seddique Mateen posted a video to Facebook where he made the offensive claim while speaking in Dari and standing in front of the flag of Afghanistan.
He also described his 29-year-old terrorist son as ‘a good son and an educated son’ who was ‘very dignified’ and had ‘respect for his parents’.

Mr Mateen repeatedly said he is ‘saddened’ by the mass killing, the deadliest in US history, and said he did not understand what caused his son to launch the attack.
Omar Mateen died in a gunfight with police having killed 50 people at Pulse nightclub and injured many others.

Mr Mateen said: ‘I don’t know what caused him to shoot last night. I am deeply saddened and announce this to the people of America.’
He added that ‘God himself will punish those involved in homosexuality – this, is not for the servants’ of God. Previously, Mr Mateen, who was born in Afghanistan, said his son became very angry when he saw two men kissing in front of his wife and child.
