Team GB came away with the gold medal in the men’s team sprint event at the Rio 2016 Olympics on Thursday.
Philip Hindes, Jason Kenny and Callum Skinner were tipped for the top prize in the lead-up to the event and claimed GB’s fourth gold medal of the Games in the final against New Zealand at the Rio Olympic velodrome.
It was GB’s third win on the trot in the event with a new Olympic record time of 42.440 to secure victory in the first medal up for grabs at the velodrome in Rio.
The heroic three-man team, led by the experienced Kenny, swept aside Venezuela in Heat 4 on their way to the final which meant their destiny would be decided against New Zealand.
An impressive time of 42.640 was enough to qualify for GB as they cruised past Venezuela in order to compete for the gold medal. GB’s Kiwi opponents broke the Olympic record on course to the final – a record which was set and later broken again by Hindes, Kenny and Skinner during the enthralling event.
